Saturday, March 30, 2002 We've been enjoying Miles Thompson's artwork for years; we just didn't know it. The animator has worked on some of our favorite Cartoon Network shows, including 2 Stupid Dogs, Dexter's Laboratory and Johnny Bravo. But when he's not making cels for a buck, he's creating his personal artwork, which, he says, can't be homogenized or corrupted like the work he does for his paying gig. Though inspired by cartoons (in addition to Tiki culture and music, especially historic jazz), his fine art isn't as family-friendly as the others. Pieces, including some in the new exhibit, Squaresville, at Forbidden Gallery and Emporium, feature disheveled versions of Mickey Mouse, Fred Flintstone and various advertising mascots. There are also record covers with layers of added artwork on top and odes to Lindy Hoppers, Dizzy Gillespie and Billie Holiday. The exhibit is open through April 28; the gallery is open Saturdays from noon to 6 p.m. and by appointment Sundays through Fridays. Forbidden Gallery and Emporium, 3603 Parry Ave. Call 214-887-5939.
